Silver for Lewis-Francis

Despite his blocks slipping at the start, Mark Lewis-Francis claims Commonwealth silver behind Jamaica's Lerone Clarke.

Last Updated: 07/10/10 6:05pm

Jamaica's Lerone Clarke won the men's 100m gold at the Commonwealth Games ahead of Mark Lewis-Francis, while Osayemi Oludamola of Nigeria was handed the women's event on appeal in Delhi.

Lewis-Francis won his second silver medal of the year after also coming second in the recent European championship, but it could have been gold for the English sprinter.

His blocks slipped badly at the start and Lewis-Francis had to come from last place to bag silver in 10.20 seconds, and although he was delighted he knows it could have been gold.

"I could have won that," he said. "My blocks slipped at the start. I'm gutted. I have had a Commonwealth Games curse.

"There is a lot more there to come. I am not disappointed at all. It's amazing. I'm over the moon. I have had two years out with injury and I've come back with two silver medals.

"I don't give up. It is about digging in and trying hard and this is the reward. I'm second in the Commonwealth and second in Europe."

Clarke, whose mother and elder brother live in England, savoured his gold medal which came in a time of 10.12secs.

He said: "This means the world to me. After a very long season and messing up at the world indoors I came out here because I wanted the championships and I've got it."

Trinidad and Tobago's Aaron Amstrong grabbed bronze in 10.24.

Women's controversy

In the women's event, Sally Pearson bagged Australia's first 100m Commonwealth gold in 36 years, but was later disqualified after England officials launched an appeal.

England's Laura Turner was deemed to break fractionally ahead of Pearson and got disqualified for a false start, and although she ran under protest she finished last while team-mate Katherine Endacott came fourth.

However, runner-up Oludamola was later promoted to gold on Pearson's demotion, Natasha Mayers silver - for St Vincent and the Grenadines' first Commonwealth medal - and Endacott bronze after a second personal best of the day, 11.44.

Carys Parry of Wales and England's Zoe Derham won medals behind Canada's Sultana Frizell in the women's hammer - Parry claiming silver with a season's best 64.93m and Derham bronze with 64.04.

Someone who will not be returning from Delhi with a medal is England's Martyn Bernard, after he crashed out of high jump qualifying.

The 25-year-old from Wakefield won Commonwealth silver in Melbourne four years ago and European Championships bronze in Barcelona in July and was a strong medal contender.

However, Bernard could only record a best height of 2.13 metres as 14 athletes met the 2.16m qualifying standard for Saturday's final, including England's Tom Parsons and Samson Oni.

"I messed up - that's all there is to it," said Bernard. "I just wanted to qualify, obviously - that's what this round is for. I'm hugely disappointed to finish the season like this. Now I'm disappointed with the entire season."
