Nicholson bags Second win this year in Crawley in Sunday's Players Championship

Paul Nicholson's liking for Crawley surfaced on Sunday as he won his second Players Championship event of the year at the venue. The 32-year-old pocketed the £6,000 first prize by beating the unlucky Terry Jenkins, who also lost to Gary Anderson in Saturday's final, 6-3 at in Sunday's final at the K2 Centre. Nicholson picked up a Players Championship title in Crawley back in March, as he ended a long drought of over a year without picking up a title. After beating Nicky Bache, Mark Frost and Mark Walsh, Nicholson then had to come through two 6-5 thrillers, against Steve Brown in the quarter-finals and Wes Newton in the semis. Jenkins started stronger in the final as he led 3-1, but Nicholson found his feet with a 112 outshot and then reeled off five legs on the spin - capped by a stunning 126 finish on the bullseye to seal the title.

Home comforts

"I wish we could play all tournaments here!" said Nicholson. "This is fast-becoming a favourite venue of mine and it's great to win again. "The first win was a bit of a monkey off my back and I also got through to the final on the Sunday last time, and that experience got me through this time. "I've got a bit more fighting spirit in me this year and I've got no doubt in my game now. If I was behind last year I would have lost, but I'm a different animal now. "I'm really looking forward to the major tournament now and that starts in Bolton in a fortnight at the UK Open. I've had some chequered experiences there in the last two years but I've made an oath that I won't make any mistakes this year. "I've moved to Lancashire now and believe I've got more fans there now, and going into a major in this form means I can't help but be positive." Jenkins still picked up £6,000 over the weekend for his two trips to the final, with him beating Andy Jenkins, Co Stompe, Darren Johnson and fellow Premier League star Mark Webster on Sunday. Scott Rand was beaten 6-4 by Jenkins in the semi-finals, with that run to the last four being Rand's best performance since joining the PDC ProTour a year ago. Premier League champion Anderson was unable to keep his winning run going after backing up his Wembley win with success on Saturday, as he was beaten by Spaniard Antonio Alcinas 6-4 on Sunday in what was the Scotsman's first loss since May 5.
