Michael van Gerwen began his bid to win a third successive PDC European Tour event with a 6-2 win over Gary Stone in the second round of the German Masters in Munich.

The Dutchman has already won the German Darts Championship and Gibraltar Darts Masters this year, and can top £1m on the PDC Order of Merit if he takes the £25,000 first prize on Monday.

Stone shared the opening four legs with the world No 1, but Van Gerwen found another gear to pull clear in the second half of the game, landing a 10-darter to break throw in a crucial sixth leg.

Van Gerwen now takes on Jamie Caven in the last 16, after the Derby ace came from 3-1 down to claim a 6-4 win over Ronny Huybrechts.

James Wade produced the event's first whitewash with a superb 6-0 demolition of Benito van de Pas, averaging almost 104 in a clinical display.

Wade now faces Terry Jenkins, who defeated Jamie Lewis 6-4.

Adrian Lewis marched into the last 16 with a superb 6-3 win over Welsh youngster Kurt Parry, with the world No 4 showing his class with a 102.73 average.
