Formula One supremo plays down reports of further expansion
Bernie Ecclestone says that the Formula One calendar will not be able to expand beyond 20 races in the future.
Next season will feature a record 20 grands prix, with a new race in India being added to the 19 rounds that make up the 2010 championship.
It had been reported that Ecclestone wanted to add even more races to the calendar but the sport's commercial rights holder now says 20 is the maximum.
"We really should be at 16, to be honest," he told the
Times of India.
"Twenty is plenty, that's the limit. No more. I've been able to squeeze in 20 but I wouldn't want to increase it. There'll be mayhem otherwise."
Formula One will also return to America in 2012 at a brand new track in Texas, meaning one of the current races will have to be dropped to adhere to Ecclestone's 20-race limit.
He added: "America is a country that should have an F1 race. We have a race in India and soon we'll have one in the US. It's great."
