If Monte Carlo can why can't we? Says motorspost chief
Hong Kong's motorsport president Wesley Wan is hoping that the city could soon stage a Formula One Grand Prix.
Wan was stunned at the level of interest in the sport when a demonstration event on Saturday brought 43,000 locals onto the streets of the city.
The demo, called the Red Bull Dragon Run, saw Jaime Alguersuari entertain the crowds along the Lung Wo Road in Red Bull's demonstration car.
The Toro Rosso driver performed a series of sprints, burnouts, engine breaks and donuts for the delighted onlookers.
And Wan is now hoping that such a high level of public supports will take Hong Kong a step closer to hosting a full-blown Grand Prix.
"This was the first step in gaining the support of the people," he told the South China Morning Post.
"We wanted to raise the exposure of Formula One by staging the live show, and I hope it will lead to Hong Kong hosting a grand prix race one day.
"My dream is that Hong Kong, like Singapore, Malaysia and China, will be a stop on the grand prix circuit."
There are currently three street circuit venues on the F1 calendar but Wan was not put off by the prospect.
He added: "If Monte Carlo and Singapore can have it, why can't Hong Kong?"
