German driver given 18-month suspended sentence
Former Force India driver Adrian Sutil has been found guilty of causing GBH and handed an 18-month suspended sentence.
On Monday, Sutil had apologised in court for wounding Eric Lux, CEO of the Genii Capital investment firm which controls the former Renault team, with a champagne glass in the incident last April but insisted he had not meant to hurt him.
The verdict was passed at the Munich district court after a two-day trial, with a fine of 200,000 euros also being issued. Prosecutors had asked for a 21-month suspended sentence.
Sutil said that he only intended spill his drink on Lux, who required stitches in a neck wound, and that causing the injury was completely "unintentional and accidental".
The 29-year-old told the court on Monday that he had "tried everything" to come to a settlement out of court, offering "tens of millions" and a charitable donation, but his offers were turned down.
"I'm terribly sorry. I never wanted what happened there to happen," Sutil said on the first day of the trial.
Sutil's fine will be paid to charities.
