Lewis Hamilton has put himself in pole position to ignite his World Championship bid in Sunday's German GP after a nerve-jangling defeat of the Red Bulls in a riveting qualifying hour at the Nurburgring.

"We had a good run yesterday looking at the race, so I think we did our homework and now it's up to us," said Vettel after making the front row for the fifth time in 2013. "We put the car on the first row, it wasn't quite enough for pole position, but we should have a good race from there." At long last, all of Sunday's attention may finally return to the racing. For Vettel, there's the prospect of a first-ever victory on home soil. For Hamilton, there's the incentive of underlining his candidature as a genuine title contender with a maiden victory for his new Mercedes team. Bring it on.
