McLaren driver wants blown diffuser issues fixed quickly

Lewis Hamilton hopes that McLaren can properly implement their planned upgrades as soon as possible in order to challenge for race wins again. The British driver finished second in his home race at Silverstone on Sunday but was convincingly outpaced throughout the weekend by the Red Bulls. McLaren had introduced their version of the blown diffuser, now used by several of their rivals, on the first day of practice at the British Grand Prix. But the device did not work effectively and team principal Martin Whitmarsh decided to remove it for the rest of the race weekend. Hamilton said he wanted to persevere with the diffuser at Silverstone and is eager for the upgrade to be quickly reintroduced.

Mega

"If we get our upgrade and it works we are going to be doing a mega job," he said. "I didn't actually want to change the floor. I wanted to stay with it, but the team had to make a team decision because it just wasn't delivering. I've no idea why. "I am hoping they fix it and bring it, and I can go out there and use it to give me a much better fighting chance to get past these guys (Red Bull). "Our race pace is almost as good. I hope once we get that diffuser it really is going to help us close that gap and we have a real race with them." Despite lagging behind the Red Bulls, Hamilton has maintained his lead in the championship standings with a pair of second-place finishes in the last two races.
Lead
The 2008 world title winner has a 12-point cushion over team-mate Jenson Button and is 17 ahead of Webber, meaning McLaren also lead the constructors' championship. "'Surprised' is probably not the word," Hamilton said when asked if he was surprised to still be out in front. "I definitely did not expect to be leading the championship at this point. I didn't really think I would be eking out the lead." "Just think how far I'd be ahead if I had Barcelona in the bag as well. That would be nice," he added, referring to his late tyre failure at the Spanish Grand Prix. "But on my side of the garage I've just been doing a solid job in getting the results."
