Ferrari take a backseat in afternoon

Heikki Kovalainen was by far the quickest man in Friday's second free practice session at Silverstone, the McLaren Mercedes driver outpacing Red Bull's Mark Webber by over half a second. With the track temperature 10 degrees hotter than it was in the morning, McLaren made the most of the conditions with Kovalainen setting a time of one minute19.989 seconds to finish top of the timesheets. Team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished in third place ahead of Webber's team-mate David Coulthard. Nico Rosberg placed his Williams in the top five, ahead of Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel and Honda's Jenson Button. After setting the quickest time of the day in session one, Felipe Massa was the best-placed Ferrari driver in eighth place. However, the Brazilian's running was limited as the team spent the better part of the session fixing his car which had been damaged in the morning. Team-mate and World Champion Kimi Raikkonen had an even more circumspect session, the Finn completing more laps than Massa and yet only setting the 12th quickest time, over 1.2 seconds slower than Kovalainen. Jarno Trulli had a big off in session two, the Italian losing control of his Toyota TF108 when its rear wing disintegrated on the approach to Stowe corner. Trulli's car went hurtling backwards into the tyre barrier, causing damage to its rear. The driver, however, climbed out unaided. However, the yellow flags were soon out again after Kazuki Nakajima slid into the wall approaching Bridge after spinning on the exit of Abbey. The Williams driver limped back to the pits, leaving debris in his wake. Kovalainen's best effort was four tenths slower than Massa's best of the morning - indicative that teams were concentrating on longer runs in the afternoon.
