Interpretation of diffuser regulation incurs wrath of Renault boss
Renault's Flavio Briatore has voiced his displeasure at rival teams exploiting the grey areas in Formula One's technical regulations.
The area specifically vexing the Regie's team principal is the regulation governing rear diffuser design.
Controversy has already surrounded the diffusers on both Toyota's TF109 and the Williams FW31 as they appear to exceed the maximum height of 175mm.
However, the FIA has declared the designs to be legal, with president Max Mosley saying: "The current FIA view is that Williams and Toyota have been clever and have exploited the wording of the rules in a clever way.
"The view on our technical people is that it is okay, we will wait and see if someone challenges it."
That challenge could well come from Renault if Briatore's outburst is anything to go by, the Italian expressing frustration at how, in his view, some teams exploit the rules.
"It's not right that some diffusers are made in a certain way while others in a different way, because I don't think it's fair that everyone has his own rule book," he told the
Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.
"(It) looks like there are two sets of regulations: the one that allows some teams to have the diffuser built in a certain way that is forbidden to others because it's considered illegal. That's not what we expect. We want black or white rules but equal to everyone."
However, Briatore would not confirm whether or not Renault would be lodging a protest.
He added: "We'll see, because at least three teams don't respect the regulations."
