McLaren suffers brake problem in Abu Dhabi
Lewis Hamilton says he's proud of the way McLaren have recovered this season despite an early end to his 2009 campaign.
The Englishman headed for an early bath in Abu Dhabi after brake problems put an end to his burgeoning battle with the Red Bulls for victory at Sunday's inaugural day-night race at the Yas Marina circuit.
Starting on pole position having appeared strong throughout the weekend, Hamilton took the lead in the race but was unable to shake off eventual winner Sebastian Vettel and the latter's team-mate, Mark Webber.
He lost the lead after pitting on lap 17 but having reported a problem with his right rear brake on the following lap, McLaren elected to retire him rather than run the risk of an accident.
"There was a problem with the brakes - I couldn't stop the car. I was locking and locking and locking it was harder than ever to drive the car," he told the
BBC.
"It's a shame as the car felt so good these last couple of days, but we haven't had many brake problems this year so there you go."
Hamilton also paid tribute to his team after what started as a disastrous World Championship defence ended with two victories and fifth place in the drivers' standings.
He added: "I still think the whole team should be really proud of how we have recovered this season."
With Ferrari unable to score points on Sunday, McLaren were able to secure third place in the Constructors' Championship behind Brawn GP and Red Bull.
