Boss of beleaguered A1GP series looks to build F1 link

A1GP boss Tony Teixeira has said he is talking to Campos Meta about buying into the new Spanish-based Formula One team. The negotiations are part of the Portuguese-born South African businessman's plans to "bring A1 into F1", even though the future of the self-styled "World Cup of Motorsport" is currently in doubt. "I am talking to Campos, but I'm not the only one," Teixeira said. "There's more than one group talking to Campos and for us it has got to be part of an A1 deal." he added. The opening three rounds of what was supposed to have been season five of A1GP have been cancelled after its operating arm, which is based in Britain, went into liquidation. The final round of the season, scheduled for Assen in the Netherlands in May, has also been cancelled. Teixeira revealed in September that he had secured long-term funding after a financial restructuring of A1GP. Even so, it is anticipated that the remaining five rounds will also be cancelled before an attempt is made to re-launch the series later in the year. Former F1 driver Adrian Campos, who founded the Campos Meta team, ran A1 Team Mexico and the aim of Teixeira's involvement would be to create a path for A1GP drivers to reach F1. Alongside, Virgin Racing, USF1 and Lotus F1, the team are one of four new outfits on the Formula One grid this season.

Speculation

However, there has been persistent speculation about their ability to make the season-opener in Bahrain on March 14, with Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone among the doubters. The team have signed Bruno Senna, nephew of the late three-times World Champion Ayrton, but have yet to announce a second driver. Campos's car has been designed by Italian manufacturer Dallara but Teixeira has dismissed a report suggesting they will not take part in any of F1's four scheduled pre-season tests. "I am aware of that report but that's not what the team principal tells me," he said. "They may make the second test but definitely the third and they will make the race. The second test is the target." Teixeira has in the past been linked to Honda, who eventually became 2009 contructors' champions Brawn - now Mercedes - GP after the Japanese manufacturer announced its withdrawal from F1. He was also linked to Spyker in 2007 - who became Force India - and Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso in 2008.
