Roma are yet to contact Ajax over a potential bid for goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, according to sporting director Danny Blind.

Reports in the Italian media suggest the Serie A club are preparing to swoop for the Netherlands No.1, who has been strongly linked with a move away from the Amsterdam Arena this summer.

Manchester United were also thought to be interested, but their capture of young Spanish keeper David de Gea from Atletico Madrid appears to have ruled them out of the race for his signature, clearing the way for the Giallorossi to pounce.

However, Ajax chief Blind insists an offer is yet to be tabled for the 28-year-old shot-stopper, who is out of contract with the Godenzonen next summer.

"I don't know if Roma are close to him, all I know is that nobody from Roma has contacted us," sporting director Danny Blind told calciomercato.it.

"Perhaps they have spoken to his agent, but certainly not with us."

Improved

Stekelenburg has reportedly been offered an improved deal at Ajax, which he is considering, while Arsenal are another top European club that have been linked with the keeper.

Reports suggest Roma are hoping to snare Stekelenburg for around €8million (£7.2m), but Blind is keeping quiet over the keeper's price tag.

"I won't talk about transfer fees with the media," he added.

"Even if his contract does expire in 2012, he remains a very strong goalkeeper who is of interest to a number of clubs."

Stekelenburg, who was sidelined with injury for the end of last term, is expected to start pre-season training in Amsterdam.

The keeper has spent his entire career with Ajax since graduating from the youth academy in 2002, notching up almost 200 appearances for the Dutch giants.
