Peter Keane confirmed as Kerry football manager

Peter Keane has been confirmed as manager of the Kerry senior footballers on a three-year term.

The Kingdom have been on the hunt for a new boss since the departure of Éamonn Fitzmaurice and there was no shortage of high-profile contenders as speculation rumbled on in recent months.

The confirmed backroom team of Donie Buckley, Maurice Fitzgerald, Tommy Griffin and James Foley are not found wanting for experience.

Keane took over the county's minor team in 2016, and has proceeded to lead them to All-Ireland titles in each of the last three seasons as they completed a 'five-in-a-row' at the grade. Given that so many young stars breaking through into the senior set-up have successfully worked under Keane, there is a belief in the south-west that this is a positive appointment.

There is a real opportunity for Keane to build a new team, as the likes of David Clifford and Sean O'Shea look capable of leading the side in the coming years. Meanwhile, Kieran Donaghy, Donnchadh Walsh and Anthony Maher have all retired suggesting there is a new era for Kerry football at hand.

Kerry won the Munster title in 2018, but flattered to deceive in the Super 8s with a loss to Galway in Croke Park ultimately dashing their hopes of a spot in the All-Ireland semi-final.
