Sir Nick Faldo rolled back the years to help Team Faldo to victory in the R&A’s Celebration of Champions, as Tiger Woods impressed in front of Jack Nicklaus at St Andrews.

Faldo partnered fellow former Champion Golfers Zach Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen and John Daly in the four-hole contest on the Old Course, where teams took the best two scores from each hole.

The quartet combined to post six under and finish three clear of the chasing pack, with Team Davies - led by Dame Laura Davies - and Team Woods both claiming a share of second.

Woods, who played 18 holes on both Saturday and Sunday ahead of his first competitive appearance since May's PGA Championship, was part of a star-studded team alongside Rory McIlroy, Lee Trevino and 2018 AIG Women's Open Georgia Hall.

The 46-year-old fired a brilliant approach to set up a birdie at the par-four second and also picked up a shot at the final hole after driving the 18th green, with the former world No 1 confident about his fitness ahead of the final men's major of the year.

"I'm feeling good," Woods said mid-round. "Game day is Thursday so I just have to pace myself until then and get after it and hopefully we can put ourselves in contention on the back nine come Sunday."

Woods was part of an iconic photo on the Swilcan Bridge with fellow golfing great Jack Nicklaus, an image that will be part of the golfing archives forever, while McIlroy admitted he felt "a little bit emotional" to be part of the historic event.

"If you told a 10-year-old Rory I would be doing this I wouldn't have believed you," McIlroy said. "To get my name on the Claret Jug, to be as close as I am to my hero growing up (Woods) and to be doing this, the Champions Dinner tomorrow in the R&A clubhouse... it's sort of pinch-yourself moments.

"It's really, really cool and I am so privileged and humbled to be part of it all."

Defending champion Collin Morikawa's team - containing AIG Women's Open champion Anna Nordqvist - ended five strokes back in tied-fifth, with teams led by Jordan Spieth and Henrik Stenson also finishing on one under.
