Watch how Ricky Barnes made a complete mess of his tee shot at the 17th during the second round of the AT&T Byron Nelson

Watch how Ricky Barnes suffered a golfer's nightmare by hitting a dreaded shank off the tee at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Barnes held a share of the lead after an opening-round 64 at TPC Four Seasons, only to slide down the leaderboard after a slow start to his round on Friday.

The American posted back-to-back bogeys from the 14th but undid some of the damage with a two-putt gain at the par-five 16th, before experiencing his hole of horror at the par-three 17th.

Barnes shanked his tee shot so far right that it avoided the spectators and went straight into the trees, with the 36-year-old that convinced his shot had gone out of bounds he hit a provisional ball.

After finding his original effort, Barnes hacked his second shot onto the fairway and pitched his third onto the green before taking two attempts from 10 feet for an ugly double-bogey five.
