Anthony Wall succumbed to a final-hole defeat as the defending champion exited the Paul Lawrie Match Play in the quarter-finals.
Wall missed out on a place in the final after a narrow defeat against Johan Carlsson at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach on Saturday.
The Englishman, who secured his first European Tour title in 16 years at last year's tournament, made a bogey at the par-five 18th as his Swedish opponent finished in style with a birdie four to set up a semi-final meeting with Marcel Siem.
The 37-year-old continued his fine week in Germany with with a narrow victory over Robert Rock on the first extra hole to secure his place in the semi-finals.
Rock was 2up at the 15th but Siem, in front of his home supporters, made birdies at the 15th and 16th to recover the position before securing the win at the 19th.
"That was by far the toughest match," Siem said. "I don't know how many birdies we made on the back nine together but it was quite a lot. I was down all day and it was very tiring because you have to fight and dig deep."
Adrian Otaegui carded three successive birdies on the back nine during his 2&1 victory over Germany's Alexander Knappe, who extended the contest with birdies at the 13th and 15th but the Spaniard kept his hopes of a maiden European Tour title alive.
The final semi-final spot was taken by Alejandro Canizares after the 34-year-old won a lengthy contest against Chris Paisley at the second extra hole.
Both players made four birdies in regulation play but it was the two-time Spanish European Tour winner who progressed to a semi-final clash with compatriot Otaegui.
Saturday's morning session saw the last 16 encounters take place and home favourite Siem progressed past Belgium's Thomas Detry 3&2 which included four birdies on the front nine.
England's Rock enjoyed a fast birdie-birdie start in his 2&1 victory over Florian Fritsch despite the German's best efforts over the back nine.
Canizares, who knocked out the tournament's host Paul Lawrie on Friday, battled past Ireland's Paul Dunne at the 21st hole in an even contest which saw both players card three birdies and booked himself a quarter-final meeting with England's Paisley, who edged past China's Ashun Wu 1up at the 18th.
Sweden's Carlsson made a birdie-birdie-birdie run on the back nine on his way to a comfortable 4&2 success over Australia's Marcus Fraser to set up a last eight battle with defending champion Wall who dominated his encounter with former Ryder Cup winner Jamie Donaldson 5&4.
There were defeats for the English pair of Tom Lewis and Ashley Chesters as they fell to 2up and 6&5 defeats against Knappe and Otaegui respectively.
