Paul Casey and Jason Day moved in to contention during the second round of the Wells Fargo Championship, as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods slipped down the leaderboard.
Peter Malnati tops the leaderboard heading into the weekend, after the world No 673 followed his opening-round 67 by mixing five birdies with two bogeys on Friday at Quail Hollow.
Day fired a four-under 67 to lift himself within one of the halfway lead and in a share of second alongside Arron Wise, with Casey a further stroke back alongside Charl Schwartzel.
Woods birdied the last to close a two-over 73 and sneak into the weekend just inside the cut mark, with McIlroy also in the group on two over and nine off the lead after stuttering to a five-over 76.
"It was much better ball-striking than yesterday and a much cleaner scorecard," Casey told Sky Sports. "I gave myself a lot of opportunities. Certainly trending in the right direction with the way I played."
Day posted a two-putt birdie at the seventh and holed a 10-footer at the next to reach the turn in 33, before holing out from the bunker to eagle the 10th and cancelling out a blemish at the 11th by draining a 25-foot gain on his penultimate hole.
Casey opened with a 35-foot birdie and added three more during his round to get to five under for the week, as Schwartzel carded four birdies in a six-hole stretch around the turn.
Johnson Wagner was a shot back as the sole occupant of sixth place on four under, while a round-of-the-day 65 from Bryson DeChambeau lifted the American to within five of the lead.
Masters champion signed for a second successive 71 to sit seven strokes back, with world No 2 Justin Thomas also on level par after posting a two-under 69.
