Jordan Spieth looking forward to 'mind boggling' Open course

Jordan Spieth says he cannot wait to take on the challenges of St Andrews for the first time as a professional and admits it is "mind boggling" that the course is intact.

The two-time major winner will go into the 144th Open on Thursday as the favourite having won the John Deere Classic in a play-off at the weekend.

Spieth has only played at the historic course in Scotland in a practice round in 2011 and the American is stunned by the quality of the greens.

He told Sky Sports: "The golf course specifically, it's just mind boggling that it can stand the test of time and still host major championship centuries after it was built.

"It's just had minor tweaks here and there. It has yielded very low scores, which is why it's advantageous.

"To feel like you are making a lot of birdies, to feel like you need to so you can be a bit more aggressive than you would normally start a major championship.

"When I played it four years ago, I was in a different position and can take more chances, now I have to pick my spots."

The 21-year-old added: "The only thing I‘ve heard so far is it's playing softer than usual, that’s kind of nice.

"I loved it, the town, the club house, the Himalayas putting green. The entire experience of being there for two days was really cool."

Spieth will begin his bid for the third leg of a record grand slam paired with compatriot Dustin Johnson and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama.

The trio have a 0933 tee time (UK time) for the opening two rounds of the Open.
