Luke Donald targets top-50 return after good showing at St Andrews

England's Luke Donald is targeting a return to the top-50 world rankings after a good showing at the Open.

Although the 37-year-old Englishman's final-round 68 lifted him to nine under, it was not enough to put him in contention with scoring so low at St Andrews.

However after finishing joint-seventh at the Travelers Championship last month - which qualified him for the Open - and in a tie for seventh at the Scottish Open, the former world number one, currently ranked 64th, is looking to take his upturn in form straight to this week's PGA Tour event.

"I go straight to Canada now, play the Canadian Open, and then I need to move back into the top 50 to get into Akron (WGC-Bridgestone Invitational)," Donald said.

"I am moving closer every week so hopefully I can have a solid week next week and get in the top 50.

"Yesterday was disappointing to shoot 73 on a day when 68 was probably par.

"I played average and just didn't hole the putts when I had my opportunities and for me to be contending, I've got to putt extremely well for all four days."
