Spain’s Jonathan Castroviejo broke bones in his neck and arm in a collision with a spectator after Sunday’s final stage of the Volta ao Algarve.
The Movistar rider was descending down towards his team bus from the summit finish on Alto do Malhao when a fan veered into his path, causing him to fall.
Castroviejo was taken to hospital in Faro and X-rays confirmed he had fractured the ulna in his left arm and sixth cervical vertebra in his neck.
A Movistar team statement said: "Jonathan Castroviejo … suffered a bad crash while riding from the finish line to the team bus, parked on the foot of the ascent. A spectator suddenly got in his way and made him collide and fall down.
"The Basque rider remains at the medical center, awaiting for new reports and a decision on the way he'll be transferred back to his home in Spain."
Castroviejo is the second Movistar rider to be hospitalised in the past month, after Adriano Malori had to be placed in a coma due to head injuries sustained in a crash at the Tour de San Luis in Argentina.
Malori was transferred from a hospital in Buenos Aires last week to continue his recovery at a hospital in Pamplona, Spain.
