British Cycling: Only one person fit for top job, says coach Iain Dyer

British Cycling’s head coach, Iain Dyer, believes there is only one person within the sport capable of filling the organisation’s vacant performance director role, but he refuses to divulge who it is.

The national governing body is advertising the position following the resignation of Shane Sutton in April amid allegations of discrimination towards riders.

When asked how many people within cycling are fit to do the job, Dyer, who has ruled himself out of contention, replied: "In a genuine performance term? One, probably. That person has to remain nameless. I'm not sure if they are going to apply for it.

"I don't think there are many candidates within the British sporting landscape that would successfully be able to tackle the full performance realm of that role within this Olympic cycle."

British Cycling has not had a performance director since Sir Dave Brailsford resigned in April 2014 in order to concentrate on managing Team Sky. Sutton succeeded Brailsford, but only as technical director.

The other individuals Dyer may have been referring to include Peter Keen, who was performance director from 1997 to 2003; Archery GB performance director and former cyclist Sara Symington; and Dan Hunt, the former Team Sky coach who is now performance director of British Ski and Snowboard.

British Cycling is also searching for a new chief executive to replace Ian Drake, who will leave next April.
