Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish retained their lead of the Ghent Six Day going into the final night of racing.

The pair are attempting to win the event for the first time together in what is expected to be Wiggins' final race before retirement.

Teams of two compete in a series of races for six consecutive nights, with the winners being the pair who amass the most laps and points over the course of the week.

A lap ahead of their main rivals overnight after a dominant display on day four, Wiggins and Cavendish saw Kenny de Ketele and Moreno de Pauw - the pair that beat them in last month's London Six Day - wipe out their advantage in the first madison and take the lead courtesy of their superior points total.

But Wiggins and Cavendish took a lap in the final event of the day, the second madison, to boost Wiggins' chances of ending his career on a high.

They now lead second-placed De Ketele and De Pauw by a lap, but they still have only 358 points compared with the Belgian duo's 385.

Third-placed Elia Viviani and Iljo Keisse are also a lap down but have 370 points.
