British Cycling reveals first 50 stars to be inducted in February
British Cycling is set to launch a Hall of Fame with the first 50 cycling heroes to be inducted in February.
With the national governing body celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, they have introduced the Hall of Fame which will include a range of riders, coaches, team managers, sport administrators and volunteers that have been instrumental in progressing the sport.
The Hall of Fame will focus on the achievements of past cyclists rather than current cycling success to pay tribute to those from the past five decades.
Therefore there is no place for Sir Chris Hoy as he continues to compete at the highest level, but Olympic champions Chris Boardman and Jason Queally have been named.
Olympic champion and panel member Victoria Pendleton backed the decision to recognise the achievements of those who have contributed to the sport in the past.
She said: "We made a conscious decision not to select elite riders who are still competing at an international level or coaches and managers at the top of their game.
Recognition
"We also agreed we should recognise administrators and volunteers who have been active in the sport over many years and have made a significant contribution to it during that time.
"There have also been several posthumous awards."
Robert Miller, whose 1984 Tour de France fourth-placed finish was equalled by Bradley Wiggins last summer, is included along with Britain's most successful road racers Tom Simpson, who died during the 1967 Tour, and Tour stage winner Barry Hoban.
Olympic and world medallists Yvonne McGregor, Craig MacLean, Paul Manning, Beryl Burton, Hugh Porter - now a renowned commentator - and Graeme Obree are also among those inducted.
