Brailsford was the Team GB boss at the Olympics in Beijing and London, overseeing its transformation from also-rans to the most successful nation in the world.

Brailsford has two roles - British Cycling performance director and Team Sky principal.

He had hinted over the summer that he may take a step back from the national governing body to concentrate on the road with Bradley Wiggins and the Team Sky squad.

He has however decided to continue doing both, having turned down a host of offers from the world of sport and business.

He is hoping that by the end of the Rio Olympics, he will be able to make way for new blood at the top of the sport.

"I'm not sure that I was ever going to let go and walk away (completely)," said Brailsford. "In my mind I like to think that there was a safety valve where you can just go 'Okay, let's look at where we are going'.

"We might structure it slightly differently, we might think about longer-term succession planning.

"I'd like to think we're building something which is sustainable; coming up to Rio if I just disappeared off sideways nobody would really notice and it would just carry on.

"If I wake up and I'm not motivated, I'm not excited by it, I will step aside, because somebody else should be doing it."
