Tour de France: Former champion Cadel Evans happy to be an underdog in 2013

Cadel Evans is pleased to not be mentioned as a potential winner of this year's Tour de France.

The 2011 champion's credentials have been overshadowed by the likes of favourite Chris Froome and Alberto Contador, and he is not expected to claim a second yellow jersey.

However, Evans, now 36, proved he is in good form by finishing third in this year's Giro d'Italia and is confident he can mount a serious challenge.

The Australian said: "It seems in the two years since I won everyone has forgotten about me as a Tour rider, so nobody is looking at me which is great.

"We come here, we prepare carefully, but all the tension and so on is focused on other riders. It is fine by me, it leaves me free to do my job."

If Evans were to win the 100th Tour, he would become the oldest champion in history - a record currently held by Belgian Firmin Lambot in 1922.

His BMC Racing general manager, Jim Ochowicz, added: "We have one single objective and that is to place Cadel Evans on the podium.

"We will be working for that goal every day, starting Saturday, for the next three weeks."
