UCI Road World Championships: Lisa Brennauer and Lennard Kamna give Germany TT double

Germany’s Lisa Brennauer produced a well-paced performance to claim victory in the elite women’s time trial at the UCI Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain.
The 26-year-old stopped the clock on a 29.5km course in a time of 38min 48sec, 18 seconds faster than runner-up Anna Solovey, of Ukraine, and 21 seconds ahead of third-placed Evelyn Stevens, of the United States.
Brennauer had been second quickest behind Solovey at the second intermediate time split, after 21.2km, but while Solovey slowed over a late climb, Brennauer had reserved energy for the ascent and stormed into an unassailable lead.
Defending champion Ellen van Dijk, of the Netherlands, started well but struggled in the last 15km and eventually finished 1min 11sec down in seventh, while New Zealander Linda Villumsen saw her run of five consecutive world time trial podiums come to an end with a ninth-place finish.
There was no British representative in the race after British Cycling opted not to enter a rider.
'Overwhelming'
The victory was Brennauer’s second of this year’s world championships, having already won gold in the team time trial with Specialized-lululemon on Sunday.
She said: “I had a really good day. The race was very long but I gave it my all on the climb. It’s overwhelming. I can’t believe it right now.”
Brennauer’s victory completed a double triumph on the day for Germany, after Lennard Kamna had earlier powered to a dominant win in the junior men's individual time trial.
The 18-year-old led by comfortable margins at both of the intermediate splits and continued to pull away from his rivals in the final sector of the 29.5km course to beat the United States' Adrien Costa into second place by 44 seconds and Australia’s Michael Storer into third by 58 seconds.
Matthew Gibson, the only Briton in the race, finished tenth, 1min 46sec down on the peerless Kamna.
