Domenico Pozzovivo eyes Tour de Suisse return after Giro d'Italia crash

Domenico Pozzovivo is already plotting a return to the peloton after escaping serious injury in a horror crash on Monday's third stage of the Giro d'Italia.

The Ag2r-La Mondiale climber was treated on the road after coming down on the final descent of the day, some 35 kilometres from the finish in Sestri Levante.

Early fears over the severity his condition were soon allayed, with local broadcasters reporting Pozzovivo to be lucid and moving when he was placed in an ambulance, and by Monday evening it had become clear he would be fine.

Pozzovivo required stitches to a wound above his right eye but a CT scan reported no brain injury, and by Tuesday morning he had started to look to the future.

“It was a long night and I even made some plans for the future,” said Pozzovivo.

“I was in the best condition of my life and I’m thinking about returning at the Tour de Suisse (starts June 13) and being competitive.

“I’m ok but it was a very heavy fall. I don’t remember what happened because I fell. I remember that the descent was difficult and maybe my wheel slipped. I wanted to finish this Giro well and it pains me to leave the race."
