The Grand Depart of the 2017 Tour de France will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany, organisers have announced.

The start of the race had been offered to London, but Transport for London turned down the opportunity after deciding it did not represent value for money.

Only the host of 2017's Grand Depart has been announced at this stage. Tour organisers Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO) will unveil full details on January 14.

It will be the fourth time the Grand Depart has been held in Germany.

As it stands, the race will not be a UCI WorldTour event, after ASO last week informed the UCI that it would be withdrawing its events from cycling's top tier in 2017. ASO also organises Paris-Nice, Paris-Roubaix, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and La Fleche Wallonne.

The 2016 Tour will start at Mont-Saint-Michel in France.
