Katusha's Alexander Kristoff won a bunch sprint on stage four of the Post Danmark Rundt, the first instalment of Saturday's double header.
The Norwegian, bronze medalist in the Olympic road race in London, outkicked his rivals at the finish in Odense, Denmark's third largest city.
Andrew Fenn (Omega Pharma-Quickstep) took second, just ahead of Theo Bos (Rabobank), with world champion Mark Cavendish (Team Sky) in fourth.
Team Sky's Lars-Petter Nordhaug finished in the main bunch to retain his lead in the General Classification.
Kristoff's six-second time bonus for winning the stage moves him up to second in the GC, one second behind Nordhaug. Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol), 10th on the stage, drops down to third, three seconds back of Nordhaug.
Breakaway
Jonas Aaen Jørgensen (Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank), Nikolay Trusov (RusVelo) and Christian Jersild Jensen (Blue Water) had gone clear in wet conditions early in the 90km route from Ringe.
As the rain continued to fall, the three-man breakaway's advantage hovered around the minute mark for most of the day; Rabobank, Garmin-Sharp-Barracuda and Team Sky ensuring the peloton kept it under control.
The trio were caught inside the final 10km as the race arrived in Odense for the first of three laps, leaving a clear road for the sprinters to battle it out.
The riders are back in action later on Saturday with a 14.5km individual time-trial in Kerteminde which will be crucial for the GC contenders as Sunday's final stage offers little scope to attack.
