Laura Trott wins omnium gold at UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Cali

Britain's Laura Trott continued her fine run with a dominant victory in the omnium in the opening round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup.

The double Olympic champion led by 10 points going into Sunday's final three events in Cali in Colombia.

Third place in the time trial and second in the flying lap extended that advantage to 36 over France's Laurie Berthon going into the points race.

Trott underlined her superiority by gaining a lap and five more points in the sprints to finish on 213 points, 53 clear of runner-up Berthon.

The victory came just two weeks after Trott won three gold medals at the European Track Championships.

She told britishcycling.org.uk: "We went into it thinking it was just a standalone points race. It's not very often you go into a world cup with that sort of lead. We didn't want to take anything for granted; I'm here to learn.

"You can throw it away in a points race. You can't just go into the race and think, 'I'll just follow'. I guess proving to myself I can do it if I have to."

While Trott celebrated, Britain's sprinters endured another difficult day.

Jason Kenny and Lewis Oliva were eliminated from the men's individual sprint in the last eight and last 16 respectively, while Katy Marchant was knocked out of the keirin in the first round.

Britain ended the Track Cycling World Cup with Trott's gold, a silver won by Andy Tennant in the individual pursuit and a bronze won by the women's pursuit team.
