Lucy Garner has been named on Great Britain's long list for UCI Road World Championships in Spain later this month.

The Sky Academy Sports Scholar is one of eight women competing for the six places on the GB team for the women's road race.

With newly crowned Commonwealth road race champion Lizzie Armitstead set to lead the team, Garner, Sharon Laws and mountain bike specialist Annie Last are among the riders competing for the remaining five places in the team.

The men's team will be without Mark Cavendish after he was left out of British Cycling's initial squad.

Cavendish, the 2011 world road race champion, required shoulder surgery after crashing at the Tour de France in July and would not be suited to the hilly men's road race course, which contains 28 climbs in 254.8km.

He tweeted: "For clarification, I requested NOT to be considered for this years World Champs, With the current GB riders, there's better guys for the job."

Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins are among 14 riders in the running for places in the eight-man line-up for the men's road race, with Geraint Thomas, Peter Kennaugh, Ian Stannard and Simon and Adam Yates among those also named.

Froome has opted against putting his name forward for the individual time trial, and in his absence, Wiggins will face off against Alex Dowsett, Steve Cummings and Thomas for one of the two spots on offer.

'Strong pool'

The world championships take place in Ponferrada, in north-western Spain, from September 21-28.

British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton said: “I’m pleased with the long list of riders we have selected for the UCI Road World Championships, and we are fortunate to have a strong pool of riders from which to make our final selection.

“It’s good to see Annie Last and Alice Barnes from the Olympic mountain bike squad named on the long list, as they could both prove to be assets to Lizzie given the hilly nature of the course, and it shows how we are developing riders.”
