Former Cork manager Conor Counihan has been appointed project co-ordinator for the county board, as the Rebels look to turn around their on-field fortunes in football.

Having suffered relegation to Division 3 of the Allianz League, the Rebels are looking to arrest their downward trajectory. Earlier this year, the county board announced a five-year plan.

Counihan will take up the newly-created three-year role which has as its key remit the implementation of the five-year plan.

Their downturn in fortunes this decade has seen them tumble down the pecking order, after winning numerous titles earlier this decade, including three conscutive National Leagues in 2010, 2011 and 2012, the 2012 Munster Championship and of course the 2010 All-Ireland Championship.

Counihan was central to those triumphs, managing the team from 2008 to 2013.

Since stepping away from the senior job, he has stayed involved with the county's underage structures.

Commenting on the appointment, county chairperson Tracey Kennedy said: "We are delighted that Conor applied successfully for this position, which is vital to the future of Cork football.

"Conor brings with him a huge amount of experience in all aspects of Cork football, along with a passion and drive that is immeasurable, and on behalf of the County Board, I would like to welcome him to our team and wish him every success in this new role."
