Limerick's Dan Morrissey looking to conquer final frontier - the Munster Championship

Limerick's Dan Morrissey has pinpointed the Munster Championship as the final frontier that this young Treaty side are yet to conquer.

John Kiely's side ended a 45-year wait for All-Ireland glory in 2018, and swiftly followed it up with a National League triumph earlier this season.

However, the bulk of the side don't have Munster medals in their pockets.

"2014 was my first year. I just missed out on a Munster medal in 2013," Morrissey said. "There is only a handful left from that 2013 squad who have a Munster medal. The vast majority of the squad don't have a Munster medal.

"It is obviously something players will want to win. Intercounty careers are so short at the minute that you want to win as much as you can while you are playing and you can look back on the medals you won then once you retire and finish up."

The Ahane club man has fond memories of that 2013 Munster final win over Cork, although he wasn't part of the playing squad:

"I was up on the terrace that day. I was in the training squad for whenever they were doing 15-on-15 games. I'd be brought in for them, but I wasn't on the official championship squad or anything like that. I was up in the terrace watching on with a few friends and the sun shining on in the Gaelic Grounds. It was a great day.

"A Munster championship medal is something you grow up dreaming of having," he continued. "I remember going to Munster finals as a child, Limerick might not have been in them, but you would have had Cork, Waterford, or Tipperary playing and you'd always dream of winning a Munster Championship with your county. 75% of the panel doesn't have a Munster medal so that is definitely a medal we would like to add to the collection.

"When you are playing senior inter-county, a National League, Munster, and All-Ireland are the three medals you want to win. Thankfully, we've won two of them over the last nine months. The Munster Championship is the next big one we want to win."

As they embark on their bid for the elusive provincial title, Limerick face familiar opposition on Sunday as the Rebels come to town.

"The last few times we have met, there has never been more than a puck of the ball between us," said Morrissey. "We've built up a nice little rivalry there. I am sure May 19 is going to be the same.

"There is not going to be much between the two teams. The way with the championship, you want to get off to a good start. If you get a win in your first game, you are setting yourself up very nicely, whereas if you lose, you are putting yourself under severe pressure leading into the next couple of weeks."

They'll be hoping to get off to the best possible start against Cork on Sunday afternoon.
