Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid has become the youngest player in NHL history to be awarded captaincy.

McDavid, who was drafted first overall by the Oilers in 2015, becomes the NHL's youngest captain at 19 years and 266 days.

The 19-year-old forward has been given the honour after the team went last season without a permanent captain, deciding to use alternates instead.

McDavid becomes the Oilers' 15th captain, joining the same list as legend Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.

Captaincy is not new to the young forward, he was captain of OHL team Erie Otters at just 16, and more recently Team North America in the World Cup of Hockey.

McDavid spent part of last season out with a broken collar bone, but still scored 16 goals in 45 games, as well as racking up 32 assists.

"I'm very honoured and humbled to be able to wear the 'C' for this organisation, there are so many good leaders in this room, and to be able to represent them is definitely a good feeling." said the young captain.

McDavid took the youngest captain record off Colorado Avalanche captain, Gabriel Landeskog, who was 20 days older when he received the honour in 2012.
