It was a day of firsts at the German Rally on Sunday as Thierry Neuville and Hyundai won their maiden titles in the World Rally Championship.

The Belgian, driving a Hyundai i20, finished 40.7 seconds ahead of Spanish teammate Dani Sordo, who won last year while driving for Citroen.

That delivered a first-ever one-two for Hyundai, with Volkswagen driver Andreas Mikkelsen, of Norway, 17.3 seconds behind.

Neuville, 26, claimed victory after Jari-Matta Latvala and then Kris Meeke both crashed out while leading on Sunday.

Latvala had begun the day 56.6 seconds ahead of Britain’s Meeke, with Neuville in third place, 4.3 seconds further back.

However Latvala's Volkswagen left the road in a vineyard section about 8.7 miles after the start, gifting Meeke the lead, only for the Citroen driver to crash into a wall in the following stage, won by Neuville.

In claiming victory, Neuville became only the second Belgian to win a world rally following Francois Duval in Australia in 2005.
