Mike Ramsay hit the winning shot as the Sheffield Steelers kicked off their Elite League campaign with a 2-1 shoot-out win over the Belfast Giants in Northern Ireland.
Matt Stevenson gave the visitors the lead with a powerplay goal before Mark Garside's effort for the Giants took the game into overtime.
Meanwhile, Challenge Cup holders the Nottingham Panthers opened up their defence of the trophy with a 6-1 win over the Cardiff Devils in a match that also doubled as a league game.
The Devils actually led early on thanks to Sam Smith's powerplay goal but were taken apart thereafter.
Jordan Fox, on of nine Elite League debutants on display, got Panthers back on level terms after just under 10 minutes.
Davide-Alexandre put Nottingham in front with the first of a personal hat-trick and three further goals in the space of five minutes gave the hosts breathing space.
The Panthers eased up in the third period and a solitary powerplay goal from David Clarke completed the scoring.
