On Monday Night Raw, John Cena and CM Punk clashed for the opportunity to face WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio at Night of Champions.
As the controversy from SummerSlam continued to overshadow events on Raw, Triple H decided to exert his control and announced that former WWE Champions Punk and Cena must face off in the night's main event, with the winner earning a title match against The Mexican Aristocrat at Night of Champions.
Before that match, however, John Laurinitais delivered word to WWE COO Triple H that his good friend, Kevin Nash, had been involved in a car accident.
The Executive Vice President of Talent Relations relayed to The Game, who had argued with Nash just minutes before, that Canadian authorities informed him the former WWE Champion had been taken to a nearby hospital. The WWE COO rushed to be by his friend's side and left the reins of the show in Laurinitais' hands.
Adding to the already intense situation, The Mexican Aristocrat and Laurinitais opted to sit at ringside to observe the match.
Animosity
Once the match got under way, Punk and Cena continued their animosity, both colliding with and countering each other. It was a thrilling main event until Kevin Nash shockingly emerged inside the arena, distracting The Second City Saviour and allowing the leader of the Cenation to pin the Cult of Personality.
The controversial turn of events prompted even more questions than answers. Did Laurinitais actually really receive a phone call informing him that Nash had been in a car accident, or did he just want to get Triple H out of the arena?
Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne overcame David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty to become the new WWE Tag Team Champions. The fan favourites overcame the distinct size advantage of the former Nexus disciples with a combination of agility, athleticism and high-flying prowess.
Former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio confirmed via his Twitter account on Monday that he will require immediate surgery after sustaining an in-ring injury. Mysterio is set to undergo knee surgery next Friday and will be out of action for several months.
