The grapplers' duelled for the WWE Title in a Last Man Standing bout at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view in St Louis, Missouri, but the clash was rendered a no-contest when after 20-odd minutes of brawling, Ryback smashed Cena through the wall of bulbs on the stage.
The Human Wrecking Ball - whose dust-up with Cena include the use of tables and a fire extinguisher - injured his rival and himself, meaning both competitors were unable to make the referee's 10-count and were swiftly attended to by medical personnel.
Triple H also ended the evening in pain, after he was battered, bruised, cracked in the skull by his own sledgehammer and ultimately pinned by Brock Lesnar inside a Steel Cage.
The Game and erstwhile UFC Heavyweight Champion Lesnar engaged in a brutal ding-dong match inside the barbaric metal structure, but the former looked like he had seized the initiative when he plucked a camouflaged hammer from the top of the cage.
Revenge
However, Lesnar was able to grab the weapon himself and after a little help from his wily manager, Paul Heyman, walloped Triple H in the jaw with the mallet and covered his foe to gain revenge for his defeat to the King of Kings at WrestleMania in April.
Elsewhere, Chris Jericho downed Fandango after catching the ballroom fanatic in a mid-air Codebreaker; Sheamus bested Mark Henry in a Strap Match; and Alberto Del Rio forced Jack Swagger to say 'I Quit' to become the number one contender to the World Heavyweight Title.
The Shield, meanwhile, had a golden night; Dean Ambrose knocked of Kofi Kingston to claim the United States Championship, while his cohorts, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, ended Team Hell No's eight-month stint with the WWE Tag Team Titles.
Plus, in a brutal Extreme Rules match, hometown hero Randy Orton slayed the Big Show, hitting the World's Largest Athlete with two RKOs before finishing him off with his trademark punt kick to the head.
