Axel: the third-generation grappler (L) is thriving under Heyman

The man formerly known as Michael McGillicutty defeated Triple H on his first appearance on Raw under Heyman's tutelage, and he backed that up on Monday night by vanquishing WWE Champion John Cena via count-out.

Axel - the son of "Mr Perfect" Curt Hennig and the grandchild of Larry "The Axe" Hennig - was handed a little help from elsewhere, though, with Cena failing to make the referee's 10-count after he had exited the ring following a distraction from WWE Payback opponent, Ryback.

Ryback's skulduggery came about after Cena had announced the duo's WWE Title clash at the next pay-per-view would be a Three Stages of Hell Match, comprising a Lumberjack bout, a Tables contest and, finally, an Ambulance duel.

However, as well as playing host to that bone-crunching encounter, WWE Payback could also signal the return to action of erstwhile WWE Champion CM Punk, who has not appeared on WWE television since the night after he lost to The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29.

Goaded

The Second City Saint is scheduled to go one-on-one with WrestleMania 28 foe Chris Jericho is his home town of Chicago after his confidante, Heyman, was goaded into accepting Y2J's challenge following an appearance on The Highlight Reel.

The Shield, meanwhile, kept their gold intact in Calgary, Canada; Dean Ambrose pinned Kofi Kingston to retain his United States Title, while Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns bested Team Hell No to remain WWE Tag Team Champions.

Elsewhere, Sheamus and Randy Orton united to down Team Rhodes Scholars; Alberto Del Rio beat Big E Langston, and Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett was conquered by Fandango after receiving a Skull Crushing Finale from guest referee, The Miz.

Plus, Canadian favourite and birthday girl Natalya was serenaded by The Great Khali after the Punjabi Playboy and Tons of Funk had knocked off 3MB - but the Hart Dungeon graduate's mood quickly soured when she and Kaitlyn lost to the Bella Twins.
