Sami Zayn’s hopes of winning the NXT Championship were shattered on Thursday night following some quick thinking by Adrian Neville.

Challenger Zayn seemed set to seize gold after rolling out of the way of champion Neville’s Red Arrow manoeuvre and seeing his rival pick up an apparent injury from his crash landing.

But as the Canadian checked on Neville, the Newcastle-born wrestler pounced, rolling up his opponent to retain the title he pinched from Bo Dallas back in February and leave Zayn distraught.

Elsewhere, Irish performer Finn Balor competed in his first NXT bout, teaming with Hideo Itami to down the high-flying tandem of Tyson Kidd and Justin Gabriel.

Balor had just begun introducing himself to the crowd at Full Sail University when Kidd and Gabriel emerged from the locker room and tried to instigate a two-on-one assault.

But Itami, who Balor had helped attack The Ascension last week, rushed to his friend’s aid and, after witnessing the chaos, NXT General Manager William Regal sanctioned a tag tussle.

Balor and Itami used myriad dropkicks and dives to seize control of their enemies and sealed the win when Balor clocked South African grappler Gabriel with a double stomp off the top rope.

Sasha Banks, meanwhile, challenged NXT Women’s Champion Charlotte after bloodying Alexa Bliss’ nose with a slap and then forcing the onetime gymnast to tap out to Bank Statement.

Plus, WWE NXT Tag Team Titlists The Lucha Dragons overcame Wesley Blake and Buddy Murphy, with Sin Cara’s eye-catching senton on Blake securing the triumph.
