WWE: Shelton Benjamin's return put on hold due to shoulder injury

Shelton Benjamin's return to WWE is on hold after the former Intercontinental Champion sustained a shoulder injury.

WWE announced on July 26 that Benjamin had re-joined the company after a six-year absence and would be assigned to the Smackdown brand.

However, the South Carolina-born star revealed on his Twitter account on Sunday that his WWE comeback has been shelved until he recovers from surgery.

"I am both disappointed & sadden to announce that due to a serious injury to my shoulder I will not be returning to @WWE at this time," wrote Benjamin.

"For now I will have to put pro-wrestling to the side as I prepare to undergo surgery to repair my torn rotator.

"This comes as a shock to me as I am no stranger to performing while in pain yet I had no idea of the severity of my condition.

"Thank you @WWE for helping me discover this situation & for giving me an opportunity to return. I will be back."

Benjamin won the Intercontinental Title three times and the United States Title once during his initial stint in WWE, while he also claimed the Tag Team Titles on two occasions with Charlie Haas.
