Boston Celtics center Aron Baynes is expected to miss four to six weeks after undergoing surgery on Thursday to repair a broken bone in his left hand.
The Celtics termed the operation, performed at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, a success in fixing Baynes' fourth metacarpal.
Baynes was hurt on Wednesday night, two minutes into the Celtics' game against the visiting Phoenix Suns as he dunked the basketball. Boston wound up losing 111-103, with Baynes finishing scoreless in his brief stint.
Baynes, 32, started the past four games in place of Al Horford, who has been sidelined due to knee soreness. He has appeared in 25 games this season and is averaging 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 14.2 minutes per game for Boston.
A New Zealand native who attended Washington State, Baynes is in his second season with the Celtics after spending three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs and two with the Detroit Pistons.
