Misfits overcame EnVyUs to cause a surprise in the grand final of the ELeague and Faceit organised tournament Overwatch Open.
Misfits overcame EnVyUs to cause a surprise in the grand final of the ELeague and Faceit organised tournament Overwatch Open, played out live on Ginx eSports TV.
The grand final was played between the North American Team EnVyUs and the European roster of Misfits and it was the latter that prevailed in front of an excited crowd in Lijiang, China.
Team EnVyUs' record in 2016 has been impressive since the team began competing earlier this year and the American side were strogn favourites to prevail.
Misfits were competing with a new line-up - having recently had to bring in two replacement players - and had exceeded expectations by making the final.
The first game - which was played on the map King's Row - was a quick victory for Misfits, the contest lasting just over four minutes.
The following game went to EnVyUs, who had sought to regain control of the match, comfortably winning the Payload mode - which requires delivering a slow-moving package to the opposition's base - on the map Nepal.
Things were a little closer between the two teams in the third match, with EnVyUs regularly looking like they were about to take control of the game with Misfits repeatedly stepping up to eventually gain victory.
The fourth and final game of the series, however, was a safe victory for Misfits, who managed to quickly guide the Payload into NV's base.
The series ended 3-1 to the underdog European side, who proved they're anything but misfits in taking home $100,000 of the $300,000 prize pool available in the Overwatch Open.
The next significant tournament for Overwatch - which begins later this week on 6 October - is the Chinese-hosted event APAC Premier.
Meanwhile, popular LAN event DreamHack recently announced it will be hosting a $50,000 prize pool tournament at its DreamHack Winter hosted in Jönköping, Sweden.
