Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer has apologised for his negative comments about quarterback Jay Cutler.
Kromer admitted he had been the 'unnamed source' behind an NFL Network story that cast Cutler in a negative light and described his play this season as disappointing.
Cutler signed a seven-year contract during the last off-season with $54m of his reported $126m salary coming in guaranteed money.
But he has proved inconsistent this season as the Bears have struggled to a 5-8 record, throwing 26 touchdowns and 15 interceptions - a number of his scores have come when games have already been lost.
But Kromer admits he should not have made the comments and he said: "I made a mistake.
"When I did, I went instantly to our offensive group and apologized to our offense as well as apologized to Jay in front of our offense that he was singled out.
"I just wanted to say I made a very poor decision talking about things outside the building - and I admit that and can't take that back."
Cutler says he harbours no ill will towards Kromer and he feels the team as a whole feels more positive after a trying week and a trying season.
He said: "I wasn't angry at him. You know, the way he talked to us and approached the issue, I think we kind of cleared the air a little bit with everybody.
"I want to play better; the offensive line wants to play better; the receivers want to play better; we all want to play better in the offense, and that's the main issue."
