The struggling Tennessee Titans have fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt after their 1-6 start to the season.
The Titans have lost 16 of their last 17 games dating back to last season and Whisenhunt leaves the team with a 3-20 record overall after finishing 2-14 last season.
Tennessee announced the decision on Tuesday, promoting Mike Mularkey to interim coach.
"After thoughtful consideration, the decision has been made to relieve Ken Whisenhunt of his head coaching duties," said Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk.
"We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction. I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward."
Mularkey has 20-plus years of NFL coaching experience, including three seasons as a head coach. Mularkey served two seasons as head coach of the Buffalo Bills (2004-05), where he went 14-18, and one season as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars (2012).
The Titans latest defeat came in Houston on Sunday, when they lost 20-6 to their AFC South rivals the Texans.
On Monday, when asked about fan unrest and his team's struggles, Whisenhunt acknowledged "I'm operating from a position here where I don't have much I can say.
"Our win-loss total is not good, so no matter what I say, it's not going to be good enough. All I can do is tell you we're going to work hard to swing it hard the other way.
"We're in here working. We're trying. We feel like we've done some things that have been good, but they're obviously not good enough."
