Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has broken the National Football League's all-time passing yard record.

Manning moved past Brett Favre's previous all-time record of 71,838 yards during the Broncos' game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

The former Indianapolis Colts quarterback needed just three yards to equal Favre's record, and achieved the feat midway through the first quarter with four yard pass to running back Ronnie Hillman.

Officials brought the game to a halt in order to recognise Manning's achievement.

However, the 39 year-old failed to break Favre's record of 186 career victories for a starting quarterback as the Broncos fell to a 29-13 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Indeed, Manning was benched in the second-half after a miserable day on the field which saw him 5 of 20 for 35 yards and four interceptions for a passer rating of 0.0.

He was replaced by Brock Osweiler with 6:34 left in the third and the Broncos trailing 22-0. They eventually got on the scoreboard with Ronnie Hillman's one-yard dive.

Since signing in 2012, Manning has guided the Broncos to one Super Bowl appearance and three division titles.
