Detroit wide receiver Calvin 'Megatron' Johnson has told friends and family, as well as Lions' coach Jim Caldwell, that he plans to retire.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter the veteran Pro Bowl receiver has told a close circle of family and friends that the 2015/16 season was his last but the Lions hope he may yet return for another season.

In January Johnson hinted at retirement but the Lions immediately responded by saying while they respected his decision, they hoped he might return for another year.

After the Lions missed out on the end-of-season play-offs Johnson said: "Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future. I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future."

The Lions then responded with the following statement: "We obviously have profound respect for Calvin and certainly understand and appreciate his decision to give proper thought and consideration to his football future."

Arizona Cardinals All-Pro Defensive Back Patrick Peterson was among those to react to the news on Twitter, saying: "MAN! Crazy to hear news about Megatron being done! So many great battles! So much respect for big #81! #Megatron."

Johnson started 16 games for the Lions last season, scoring nine touchdowns and receiving for more than 1,000 yards (1,214) for the sixth season in succession.
