Quarterback Robert Griffin III won't be back with the NFL's Washington Redskins next season, team president Bruce Allen confirmed on Tuesday.

In an interview with a San Diego radio station, Allen was asked if Griffin would be back, even though he didn't take a snap for the team in the 2015 season.

"Well, no. I see Robert getting an opportunity with another team," Allen said. "We've heard from some teams that are interested. I think he's going to have a choice of a couple teams that will let him excel in the future."

Griffin sat the entire season as Washington's third-string quarterback and watched Kirk Cousins take control of the quarterback job.

The Redskins were keen to ensure that Griffin, 26, didn't get hurt and prevent them from clearing his contract worth more than $16m (£11.5m) from their books in the off-season.

Allen praised Griffin for his conduct during the past season, one of frustration for the player who earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honours in 2012, guiding the Redskins to the NFC East division title.

"From the very beginning Robert has handled himself as a professional," Allen said. "From when we first drafted him all the way through he's been a good team-mate and a good guy.

"I know some people on the outside always like to be critical, but his team-mates like him, his coaches like him, he does have some special talents and we wish him well."

The Redskins have until March 9 to cut Griffin.
