Robert Griffin III has been named the Cleveland's starting quarterback by Browns coach Hue Jackson.
The announcement was expected after RG3 signed a two-year, $15m free-agent contract with Cleveland during the off-season following his release from Washington.
Griffin has had a strong training camp under Jackson, who is in his first season in Cleveland. Griffin beat out veteran Josh McCown, whose future with the team is uncertain.
Jackson promised to name his starter before the exhibition opener Friday against Green Bay.
"It's time. Robert has earned the right to be named the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns," Jackson said.
"Since he was signed back in March, Robert has made it clear through his actions that he is willing to do everything that has been asked of him to earn this role.
"It's now on Robert to show the organization and our fans that this is the right decision."
Griffin, whose career has been on the decline since his rookie year with the Redskins, played well in a scrimmage last week, connecting with rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman on several long passes.
